Student Connect Groups

Student Connect Groups

They say “get connected and find support“, but do you ever wonder to yourself, “how and where??“There has been a heart cry for connection and support at WPU this semester. Too many students are thinking they are alone or that they “just need to push through”. I’m here to tell you there’s more for you. I’m Julia Garrison (see my face here), I coordinate and provide well-being and resilience outreach to the WPU community. Will you join me and other WPU students in CONNECT GROUPS?

WHEN: twice a week —Tuesdays at 2pm and Wednesdays at 12:30pm –-come to both or just one. It’s up to you! If no one joins the call 15 min after start time the meeting will conclude.

WHO: If you’re a student of WPU and you’ve:
  1. Felt stressed or overwhelmed by ANYTHING in the last month
  2. Want to get to know your peers
  3. and/or have hope or a heart to support your peers
WHERE: Zoom: In order to reach the most students in the most consistent way we will meet. See zoom info below
HOW: See shield for the Zoom link and passcode and/or email me at jgarrison@warnerpacific.edu for the link or for questions
WHY: Because when we say, “you weren’t meant to figure this out alone or bear this burden alone”, we mean it. Support is a leading factor in resilience, trauma recovery, and management of stress. We need others to heal, grow, and be ourselves. Self-care isn’t just about doing things you want to do. It’s also about doing things you need to do and that you know are going to help you even a little bit. Take Connect Group as a time for self-care and peer-support.

Connect Group Guidelines:
Connect Group is a judgement free, respectful, and supportive assembly of students and 1-2 staff where thoughts, experiences, and burdens can be expressed and validated.

  • Mute your screen when you’re not talking
  • Ideally I’d like to see your faces 🙂 It helps others feel connect with you.
  • Advice is not encouraged. However, if there arises an appropriate situation only give advice/suggestions when it’s being asked for or if permission is given by the receiver.
  • Refrain from sharing another person’s story or involvement in group outside of the meeting. This will be repeatedly communicated.

5/6 Roundtable Meeting @12pm

Hi WPU community,

You’re invited to the final roundtable meeting via Zoom. See below for details. The heart behind this is inclusion and support, just getting a space for students to come together and connect while also getting practical needs met. Please join us, your participation really does matter!

Agenda for May 6th:

    • Topic: WPU Community Roundtable
    • Purpose: Support students and provide resources. The more people involved the more likely appropriate resources and creative solutions will be shared.
    • Specific questions or major points of discussion:

  • Shared experiences & I-Sharing. We’ll talk about how shared experience can build connection and prevent existential isolation. We will also reflect and recenter. As this is a big week for transition and more change, we’ll take time to metabolize all we’ve been consuming. Julia will be leading discussion and reflection questions.

    • Do you have any questions* for the group to provide feedback on?
      • Examples – Where can I find aid for groceries or rent? I feel a little lonely, any ideas? I have a [certain dilema] and want some suggestions.
    • Do you have any recent uplifting stories to share or suggestions to make?
  • Moderator/Facilitator: Julia Garrison  jgarrsion@warnerpacific.edu
  • Timeline: 30-45 minutes  (the call will be ended if no participants join after 10 minutes of start time).
  • Key information: Wednesday May6th, at 12pm. Click the Zoom invite link to join the meeting.  How to Join a Zoom Meeting.  INVITE BELOW
  • Ground rules: A roundtable discussion is just that, a respectful and open minded assembly where individuals have the opportunity to give and gain feedback, ideas, and resources. Some ground rules include:
    • Mute your screen when you’re not talking
    • Only give advice/suggestions when it’s being asked for or if permission is given by the receiver.
    • Keep comments/suggestions/questions brief and to the point.
    • Refrain from sharing another person’s story outside of the meeting.
