Creatively Coping with COVID-19: A Cross-Cohort Collaboration

In March 2020, the pandemic of COVID-19 required a rapid shift in teaching and learning practices from traditional, in-person strategies to online or physically distanced and masked approaches. All but one clinical partner cancelled in-progress clinical rotations. Guided by the Theory of Careful Nursing, a BSN Degree Program launched a cross-cohort collaboration, whereby seniors would mentor juniors in the use of software for clinical substitution and serve as assistants in skills and simulation labs. The goals of this collaboration were to keep students moving forward in their curriculum and to address the need for unbudgeted resources. The ability to react quickly and positively to sudden changes in any environment provided students with valuable clinical learning and immersion in trustworthy collaboration. Lessons learned not only facilitated uninterrupted progression in the BSN Degree Program but also developed desired knowledge, skills, and attitudes of new graduate nurses. Date: December 2, 2021. Time: 7:00PM – 8:00PM. Place: EVGT & Zoom:

Student Connect Groups

Student Connect Groups

They say “get connected and find support“, but do you ever wonder to yourself, “how and where??“There has been a heart cry for connection and support at WPU this semester. Too many students are thinking they are alone or that they “just need to push through”. I’m here to tell you there’s more for you. I’m Julia Garrison (see my face here), I coordinate and provide well-being and resilience outreach to the WPU community. Will you join me and other WPU students in CONNECT GROUPS?

WHEN: twice a week —Tuesdays at 2pm and Wednesdays at 12:30pm –-come to both or just one. It’s up to you! If no one joins the call 15 min after start time the meeting will conclude.

WHO: If you’re a student of WPU and you’ve:
  1. Felt stressed or overwhelmed by ANYTHING in the last month
  2. Want to get to know your peers
  3. and/or have hope or a heart to support your peers
WHERE: Zoom: In order to reach the most students in the most consistent way we will meet. See zoom info below
HOW: See shield for the Zoom link and passcode and/or email me at for the link or for questions
WHY: Because when we say, “you weren’t meant to figure this out alone or bear this burden alone”, we mean it. Support is a leading factor in resilience, trauma recovery, and management of stress. We need others to heal, grow, and be ourselves. Self-care isn’t just about doing things you want to do. It’s also about doing things you need to do and that you know are going to help you even a little bit. Take Connect Group as a time for self-care and peer-support.

Connect Group Guidelines:
Connect Group is a judgement free, respectful, and supportive assembly of students and 1-2 staff where thoughts, experiences, and burdens can be expressed and validated.

  • Mute your screen when you’re not talking
  • Ideally I’d like to see your faces 🙂 It helps others feel connect with you.
  • Advice is not encouraged. However, if there arises an appropriate situation only give advice/suggestions when it’s being asked for or if permission is given by the receiver.
  • Refrain from sharing another person’s story or involvement in group outside of the meeting. This will be repeatedly communicated.

Common Day of Service 9/16 Register Now

It’s that time again, a Common Day of Service 2020 and well, at WPU it’s always a good time to serve!

A Common Day of Service is WPU’s annual campus wide service learning effort where we partner with local organizations to address a community based need or resolve a problem through service. This year’s theme, Caring for our Community is appropriate as there are many national, global and local concerns that are certainly competing for our emotional reserves.  However, at WPU we will not allow those things to infringe on our vision of “serving and caring for our community in an everchanging world.”

Please join us in service on Wednesday, September 16th by registering here:
